Female Rapper Discloses Her Love For Sarkodie

Eno
So you may know Eno, the  lady who ‘refixed’ Joey B and Sarkodie’s Tonga and earned some acclaim and happens to be one of the few female rappers around.

Well, she had appeared on eTV’s The Late Nite Celebrity Show yesternight to talk about her career, love life and celebrity crush.

On her career, the Ashaiman based emcee said:

“It hasn’t been that easy for me as a female rapper. Even the industry don’t have category for Best Female Rapper but there’s Best Female Vocalist and Best Rapper and others. Even though there is a category for Best Rapper, the recognition is low. If the industry tries to push us, we will go far and I want to believe the industry felt there wasn’t any lady rappers but I’m here now”. I didn’t come to make a U Turn in the music scene and go away. I’m here for the long haul. Things like marriage won’t stop me from  rapping

I will like to marry a rapper. I love Sarkodie but he is engaged.

When Giovani, the show’s host asked  who her  celebrity crush was, but she revealed:

“I used to fight with my friends over Davido. My friend will be like she is Queen Davido and I will tell her I’m the real Queen Davido. But I’m over that now. I just loved him. But he was just by the way till I found Chris Brown.” adding that, “as for the Ghanaian stars I see them as my brothers, I love Stonebwoy because he is my school mate and area boy. But it’s also interesting to note that my school nurtured a lot of stars. Sarkodie, Yaw Siki, Stay J and MixMaster Garzy”.

Bribes: NDC Man Dares Prez Mahama To Follow Him To Antoa...

A senior member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has challenged President John Mahama to swear before the dreaded Antoa deity as a means of proving that he is indeed not corrupt.

George Boateng says he doubts the President's claim of never taking a bribe in his life, hence the challenge.

“There is no way I would believe the claim of the President that he is not corrupt. If President Mahama believes in himself that he is indeed not corrupt, I am challenging him to follow me to Antoa…yes, I will drag him to Antoa myself, so that he would come and swear that indeed he has never taken bribe…I doubt…,” he said on Accra-based Oman FM’s on Thursday.

The President during an interview on BBC’s Focus on Africa said he has never taken a bribe.

“Any human being in the world would have encountered corruption one way or the other, either being offered a bribe or a bribe being demanded from you. What you need to do is to put yourself in a position to (resist it)…

When the interviewer, Peter Okwoche, asked him directly if he has taken a bribe, Mr. Mahama responded: “No, I haven’t taken bribe”.

This response has not gone down well with some Ghanaians, with many describing the President as one who did not tell the truth.

Former scribe of the New Patriotic Party, Lawyer Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie, also known as Sir John claimed the President lied to the international community.

“John Mahama is not an angel and he knows that he has several scars on him as a politician…he is a constant receiver of bribes…,” he said on Adom FM Friday.

George Boateng, who was disqualified from contesting the President at the 2015 primaries of the NDC, said he was also certain the President takes bribes.

He has thus challenged the President to come with him and swear before the dreaded Antoa deity in Kumasi to back up his claim of innocence.

Gov’t is not Jesus, learn to do small things first’ – Eva Lokko

Progressive Peoples' Party Parliamentary candidate Eva Lokko has asked government to focus on simple and practical ideas that can make an immediate impact on the lives of Ghanaians.

She said too often government draws up big plans and elaborate projects that are however difficult and time-consuming to implement.

She was part of a panel of four politicians addressing the widening social and economic inequality gap in Ghana as observed by United Nations International Children's Fund (UNICEF).

The country’s representative Susan Ngongi said in her three-year stay in Ghana, she has observed that there is a greater concentration on politics than development.

A Ghana Poverty and Inequality Report, commissioned by the UNICEF, covering a period of 20 years, found that the richest Ghanains consume 6.8 times more food than the poorest.

It found that while around one- third of all national consumption is attributed to the wealthiest 10%, the poorest 10% citizens consume just 1.72%.

It concluded that there is the need for policy to address this gap. Discussing this need, a special Ghana Connect event organized in connection with UNICEF empanelled four political representatives from four parties.

NDC policy analyst Peter Otokunor, Vice-Chairman PNC Henry Asante and CPP Director of Education, Ideology and Philosophy Justice Hornaku.

The discussion ranged from job creation, inclusive development, social protection and agriculture.

Eva Lokko was concerned that the NDC policy analyst talked about the government's plans to shift agriculture from subsistence to commercial farming.

The government representative said there has been heavy investment in irrigation projects across the country.

“We are looking at building agricultural estates” Otokunor said. He explained that it is a programme to allow students on vacation to work on farms, learn the business of food production and earn an income.

Peter Otokonor also pointed out that government is encouraging the use of Greenhouse technology where crops and plants are grown under a controlled environment.

greenhouse is a building with a covering of glass, plastic or fiberglass that allows heat to build up inside the building.

Peter Otokunor said a batch of youths who were trained under the Youth in Enterprise Support programme have received funding to adopt greenhouse technology in farming

But Eva Lokko expressed frustration at what she believes is more talk and less action in commercial farming. The politician said farmers should be helped to use crude irrigation methods in the meantime when it is immediately needed while government looks for money to do irrigation projects she deemed expensive

“All these theories Let’s be real and practical all these theories are not getting us anywhere. We know how to do irrigation. We know how to do crude irrigation”

She wants government to help farmers use PVC pipes as the immediate method of irrigation.

“Sometimes we want to do big things before we do small things. You don’t wait for people to die before you wake them up. We are not Jesus. We don’t have the power”, she said.

The CPP Director of Education, Ideology and Philosophy Justice Hornaku also indicated that if his party is to win power in November 2016, it will be committed to mechanized agriculture by creating centers where subsidized farm equipment will be made available to farmers.

He stressed that a 38% interest rate charged by some rural banks for agriculture financing is a major disincentive to farmers. A CPP approach would be loans given at reasonable rates, he said.

He blamed neo-liberal policies of successive governments as the cause for a weak agricultural production base.

Taking his turn, PNC Henry Asante also explained the his party would focus on food processing. He said it is a sector that can create jobs because it requires division of labour.

He explained that in food processing the production plants must be set up close to its raw materials.

Jail corrupt NDC officials to prove you're not corrupt - Sir John to Mahama

A former General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party has challenged President John Dramani Mahama to prosecute corrupt officials in his administration as proof he is committed to the fight against corruption.

Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie's comments come after President John Mahama stated he has never taken a bribe on BBC.

The President is in London for an anti-corruption conference that attracted global attention days before it began. Mr. Mahama was asked by Peter Okwoche of BBC on Focus on Africa, "Have you been offered a bribe before?"

"You mean as a president?" the President asked for clarification. "As John...Mahama," the Journalist replied.
Apparently still unclear, the President asked, "As a human being?" As a person, Peter supplied.

The President explained that, "any human being in the world would have encountered corruption one way or the other, either being offered a bribe or a bribe being demanded from you.”

Peter Okwoche interrupted him, "Mr President, did you take it"? President Mahama said, "No, I haven't taken a bribe."

Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie in his response to the President's assertion on Adom Fm's 'Dwaso Nsem' , Friday, said the facial expression of the President while answering the question showed he was not being truthful.

Citing SADA, GYEEDA, Waterville, STX Housing deal, Smarttys and other corruption scandals under the NDC's eight years in office, Mr. Owusu Afriyie also known as Sir John said the President's claim should be doubted.

He alleged the president's failure in prosecuting ministers and officials in his administration who were involved in the famous corruption scandals suggests that he benefitted from the deals.

Mr. Owusu-Afriyie, who is also a private legal practitioner claimed he was aware of various deals that have been covered up by the Mahama administration.

When asked if he has taken bribe before, Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie, asked the host, Which bribe? Is your money missing? Am I a government worker? Do Ghanaians bring me their taxes? Don't trivialize this issue, I don't keep public funds.

The World Bank has approved US$150 million budget support for Ghana.

The World Bank Group’s Board of Executive Directors has approved US$150 million budget support for Ghana.

The credit from the International Development Association (IDA) supports the First Macroeconomic Stability for Competitiveness and Growth Development Policy Financing (DPF), the first of three development policy financing operations aimed at helping the Government of Ghana stabilise its economy and shore up fiscal control by implementing financial policies and processes that are transparent and predictable.

A statement by the World Bank said the Board at its meeting last Wednesday also approved IDA’s very first landmark Policy-Based Guarantee (PBG) of up to US$400 million for Ghana, which might be used to support Ghana’s future external debt financing.

IMF endorses Ghana’s 2015 budget

“The proposed credit is the first in a programmatic series that will make policy more predictable and enhance the productivity of public spending,” says Santiago Herrera, World Bank Task Team Leader for this Project.

“As Ghana transitions from concessional financing towards market-based financing, the cost of public funds will increase, and so will the productivity of public capital to ensure that future obligations can be met. It is our hope that PBG will minimise costs and risks,” it said.

Interest rates

The statement said in the context of rising interest rates and a depreciating currency, extending the maturity of public domestic debt became a daunting task.

As a result, it said, debt managers were forced to issue short-term debt to avoid committing future budgets at unsustainable high interest rates.

It said while the financial objective was achieved, it was done at the expense of rising rollover and liquidity risks.

“We are delighted to have made history today by pioneering this innovative policy-based guarantee facility, the first ever by the IDA, to a long-standing client who needs it most urgently,” noted Yusupha B. Crookes, World Bank Country Director for Ghana.

“We hope this will provide additional space to Ghana to sort out some of its short-term economic challenges and continue to provide for its poorest and most vulnerable citizens through its social safety nets programmes,” Crookes is quoted to have said.

The statement said to ensure that the most vulnerable in society were not inequitably affected by the government’s strong fiscal adjustment, the Bank Group had over the past several years supported the expansion of the Livelihood Empowerment Against Poverty (LEAP) programme, a social safety net that provides cash transfers to the poorest families in Ghana.

It said the current facility included a component by which about 350,000 poor households would be provided with cash transfers by 2017.

Ghana’s Farmerline Wins $50,000 Investment Fund From Village Capital

Farmerline and Ugandan startup Atikus have been named winners of the Village  Capital’s FinTech for Agriculture accelerator programme in East Africa receiving an investment fund of $50,000 each.

In a post by Disrupt-Africa ,the programme ended with a venture forum earlier this week, with participants ranking each other based on six criteria. Ghanaian startup Farmerline, which is expanding to East Africa and provides agricultural information to farmers, and Rwanda’s Atikus Insurance, which expands access to credit by increasing the capacity of MSME lenders via reimagined insurance and technology risk solutions, came out on top, winning US$50,000 investment each.

“We are proud to have partnered with the DOEN Foundation, the MasterCard Foundation, and Duncan Goldie-Scot to work with the best local entrepreneurs providing alternative financial services through their technology platforms,” said Ross Baird, executive director of Village Capital.

“We are excited about the positive impact that our entrepreneurs can have on improving the income of smallholder farmers–the backbone of the African economy–and eager to see our enterprises’ growth through communities across the continent.”

Eight other startups completed the programme, including Chamasoft, a web and mobile app to automate record keeping for investment groups, FarmDrive, which transforms how smallholder farmers access financial services, M-Shamba, an interactive platform for smallholder farmers and traders, and Mobipay, which provides tech solutions to various economic sectors to drive commerce and trade.

The rest of the cohort was made up of nanoCredit Technologies, which offers lending and de-risking engines, Mifugo.Trade, an online livestock marketing platform, Redcore Interactive, which has developed the remit.ug platform for online international money transfers to mobile money in Africa, and YieldUganda, which sources high quality, traceable food products for local and  export markets.

“One of the main reasons we support Village Capital is because of its unique peer selection technique. Therefore the organisation is able to create a pipeline of investments at a much lower cost than other parties and at the same time offers its participants an interesting network. In the end many more entrepreneurs with impact businesses can profit as well as the East African society as a whole,” said Nina Tellegen, chief executive officer (CEO) of the DOEN Foundation.

“I’m very pleased to be supporting these two companies. It has also been fascinating to see the progress of all the teams who have come through the programme over the past three months. They have all learnt so much, from the trainers, the mentors and each other,” said Goldie-Scot.

Ghana number one consumer of Marijuana in the World

Ghana has been cited as the number one consumer of marijuana in the world, a United Nations’ Report last year has revealed.

Whilst the report cited Ghana as being the topmost consumer of marijuana, the three Regions of the north have also been cited as being the highest in terms of marijuana consumption in Ghana.

Speaking at a ceremony organized to mark this year’s International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Drug Trafficking in Wa, Issahaque Bakuri, Upper West Regional Director of the Narcotics Control Board (NACOB), said the three northern regions propelled Ghana to that “dishonorable top”.

The day was on the theme: “Let us develop our lives, our communities, and our identities without drugs”. Mr. Bakuri in his address said it was worrying that the three regions which had been noted to be poverty endemic could lead in marijuana consumption. According to him, the issue of drugs had become a canker not only in the urban centres, but also in the rural communities.

He indicated that some youth had found solace in bringing hard drugs into the communities for local distribution thereby cultivating local consumers. The NACOB Regional Director said a lot of teenagers, young adults and middle-aged men in the society were not only using drugs, but were also trafficking the drugs from down south to the rural communities for local consumption.

“This trend is having a dramatic, negative impact on society, bringing increases in violent crimes and armed highway robbery, kidnapping and raping of innocent girls including school pupils, fatal road accidents, eroding of values and degradation of society”, he noted. Mr. Bakuri said the most challenging part of drug law enforcement in the region was in the area of prosecution of drug offenders.

He explained that NACOB embarked on a massive sensitization campaign in the region, visiting schools, communities, lorry stations and market places among others, to educate people on the dangers associated with drug abuse and illicit drug trafficking in 2014.

The NACOB Regional Director called for a sectoral approach to fight drug menace in the region. Alhaji Amidu Sulemana, Upper West Regional Minister, said government was aware that illicit drug trade had resulted in increased violence, especially in the urban areas.

In a speech read on his behalf, he appealed to the people not to stigmatize drug addicts, but rather see them as people who needed help.

Men cannot be brides and carry flowers - Rev. Steve Mensah condemns homosexuality

The General Overseer of the Charismatic Evangelistic Ministries, Reverend Steve Mensah has charged the country to take a stance against homosexuality.

“When was the last time you saw two he-goats attempting to have sex? Even in the animal kingdom, two males don't have sex", he told a cheering Christian crowd as they marked Ghana's Republic Day holiday with a National Day of Fasting and Prayers.

His call follows a running debate on homosexuality triggered by the legalisation of same-sex marriages in the USA. The practice is abhorred in Ghana, a stronghold of religion where Christians are an overwhelming majority.

Reverend Steve Mensah said the practice should be abhorred to save the country from the spiritual consequences.

He expressed shock at the idea that a wedding in church will have a bride as a man hold flowers before the pulpit.

Ghana's criminal code is silent on homosexuality but criminalizes sodomy.  Under this country’s law, a “person who has unnatural carnal knowledge of another person of not less than sixteen years of age with the consent of that other person commits a misdemeanor,” an offense punishable on conviction by a maximum three-year prison term.

“Unnatural carnal knowledge” involves “sexual intercourse with a person in an unnatural manner” and requires “the least degree of penetration.”

Several government officials have in the past condemned the practice but have refrained from calling for the criminalisation of the act.

A former Attorney-General Martin Amidu has said the practice is culturally wrong. Nonetheless, he has explained “the law does not follow you to see what you do, your house is your castle; your room is your castle, what you do there is no body’s business. It is only when you rape an adult by way of unnatural carnal knowledge that you become a subject of prosecution.”

Ms Lauretta Lamptey while the head of the Commission for Human Rights and Administrative Justice said “I think we have religious, moral, traditional and many barriers to that [homosexuality] and I don’t think we have to simply copy the Western world on everything because someone says, this is where you should be in terms of human rights of individuals.”

President John Mahama has also been reported as being against the legalisation of homosexuality in Ghana.
